Lineman Drills
By: George Skorup - Chanooka BravesStart w/ his stance .. have enough weight on his hand so his motion is forward ... not so much that he falls forward if he lifts his hand.
Teach him to step to the hole to gain position when he steps his knee should come flat against his chest .... like a wrestler shooting a take-down .... This teachs him to stay low (low man wins).
Teach him to get his head in the hole between the man and the ball and put the shoulder pad on the man first then use the trailing forearm (if he stepped right foot left arm) to strike his opponent under the shoulder pad in the rib protectors this will help rock the other man backwards.
Teach him to gain control by placing his thumbs (both hands) under the man bottom edge of his shoulder pads, plams of hands on breast plates of the shoulder pads... If you want to turn him right thrust the right arm ... left etc. Stay square on the man by thrust right, step right.
Teach him to keep his back straight up and down leg underneath him don't lean forward or he'll give up low position .... short choppy steps.
Teach the fundamentals first .... Later on bad habits are hard to break... Speed will come with practice.
For a speed drill... Get him in front of bag in his stance fire out on the bag using the above first 3 steps reset as quick as he can and repeat 5 time. Works better if you have use of a sled.
